Smoothies make a great on-the-go snack or lunch. It is nutritious and can keep you energised for a few hours.
The key to a deliciously healthy smoothie is the ingredients that go in it….of course.
My homemade smoothies must consist of a fruit/s or vegetable/s, a base, a thickener, a sweetener and other energy boosting ingredients.
The list of fruits and veggies are endless, you could add any of your favorites and combine them as you please.
The base is usually the liquid component such as milk(soy, almond, rice or cows milk) , coconut milk/water, iced tea/coffee, fruit juice or just water.
The thickener adds body and volume to the smoothie. Examples include yoghurt, nut butters, ice cream, chia seeds or oat bran.
Sweeteners are added to make the smoothie extra delicious and inviting. Examples include sugar, honey, dates, stevia, xylitol, cinnamon, etc.
Other ingredients that could be added to make the smoothie extra healthy and filling are protein powders, goji berries, flaxseed, Raw cocao, bee pollen, or other immune boosters.
Smoothies are fun to make as you can add absolutely anything you like in it and you could make a new flavour everyday without getting bored of it.
These delicious drinks are also a perfect way of getting your fussy kids to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and they would enjoy assisting in making them as well.
I will be posting a few of my favorites using different combinations of ingredients.
These smoothies are excellent during Ramadan as they are healthy and slow releasing. Smoothies make a great breakfast drink as well.
I used almond milk and coconut milk as the liquid components in the smoothies below, but you could substitute it with your favourite drink
Yum
